Go green for Ice Cream: Sustainability in the Milk Bar

We are trying our very best here at Doddington to be as eco-friendly as possible, and a lot of this can be seen in our Milk Bar, Moo-riel wouldnt be happy otherwise!

We are continually looking at ways to reduce our plastic waste. All our takeaway coffee cups are compostable, along with our milkshake cups which come from Vegware. This is a manufacturer and visionary brand, the global specialist in recyclable, compostable foodservice packaging. Their cold drink cups are made from plantbased PLA, and can all be composted with food waste, where accepted. Our coffee cups are plant based and plastic free providing a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic products. Even our coffee cup lids and other takeaway packaging, including the liners and laminate films (which form the windows) - are made from renewable plants. Our aim is to make our takeaway packaging a fully compostable alternative with minimal environmental impact.

On top of all this we also have a deal on that you get 25p off a warm drink if you bring your own container (which obviously minimises the environmental impact of takeaway packaging - if there is none - to the greatest extent)!

The drinks at the milk bar are only ever contained in glass or recyclable cans- you wont see any plastic bottles near us! To further reduce plastic waste, we are a keen supporter of the Refill Scheme. It goes without saying that we are always happy to refill your bottle of water at the Milk Bar and there is a sign in our window to let you know that its fine to ask!

Our straws follow the same green policy. Our smoothie straws are made of REPA, a 100% biodegradable (non-toxic) material made from ground seashells. It really doesn't look or feel any different from the plastic ones (that take around 450 years to decompose)! Our regular straws are paper, we cant say the word compostable enough!

One of the things we are most proud of at Doddington is our effort to try to source our goods from local areas. If we can get it locally, we will! Our bacon, burgers, bread, jams and chutneys, eggs, tea, coffee, and veg all come from local producers/suppliers. Furthermore, we home make tray bakes, quiches and other goods right here at the dairy - #milkbarmade!

Of course, we use our own ice cream, cheeses and yogurt too, and many of our ice creams are made using locally sourced ingredients as well, such as Chainbridge Heather Honey and Alnwick Rum Truffle! If you wish to know where we source the Milk Bar food produce from, they are listed below and are also mentioned on the Milk Bar menu.

We cant forget the ice cream cartons! We tend to have quite a lot of spare ice cream cartons kicking about, and we would hate to see them go to waste, so we have a system at the Milk Bar where you can take them away freely. They make great storage solutions and we are always happy to hear about what you use them for, so feel free to write in and tell us!

Sustainability is a key concern for us here at Doddington, and we are always looking for new and innovative ways to keep green for ice cream!
