One of our most frequently asked questions is whether our ice creams contain gluten? We have always aimed to use simple, natural and locally sourced ingredients (where possible). This hopefully means it's easier for people see what the ice cream is made from and those with intolerances or allergies can make an informed decision. The list of ingredients in our ice cream tends to be short - our own cow's milk, double cream, sugar, skimmed milk powder, free range egg yolks and the flavour. So strawberries go into our Real Strawberry ice cream, crushed stem ginger and ginger spice into our Double Ginger ice cream and so on. From this you'll see there is generally no ingredients in these ice creams which contain gluten.
The only time that our ice creams will contain gluten is when the added flavour does. Examples of this are our Raspberry Cranachan ice cream, which contains toasted pinhead oatmeal, and Newcastle Brown Ale ice cream (where the beer is brewed from wheat and barley). Sometimes we also produce limited edition flavours and these may also have gluten containing ingredients, such as Brown Bread ice cream, but we would always list these on the ingredients list.
If anyone is in any doubt you should always ask the ice cream server, or look on the side of the carton, where the ingredients will be listed. Allergens are highlighted in this section, on our cartons in BOLD, and in the case of gluten, the source of the gluten e.g wheat or barley will also be listed there too.
